14pt vs 16pt vs 32pt: How to Choose Business Card Thickness
· Print2Elevate team
When you hand someone a business card, they judge it in about a second — and a lot of that judgment happens through their fingertips. Thickness is the single biggest factor in how a card feels. It’s also one of the most confusing parts of ordering cards, because print shops describe it in “points.”
Here’s what those numbers mean, how each common thickness compares, and how we recommend choosing.
What does “pt” mean on a business card?
In card stock, a point (pt) is one thousandth of an inch. A 14pt card is 0.014″ thick; a 16pt card is 0.016″; a 32pt card is 0.032″. It’s a direct measurement of thickness, which makes it more useful than paper weights like “100lb cover,” which depend on the type of paper.
Those differences sound tiny on paper. In your hand, they’re not. Going from 14pt to 16pt is noticeable. Going from 16pt to 32pt is dramatic — a 32pt card is more than twice as thick as a standard one.
14pt: the dependable everyday card
14pt is the workhorse. It’s sturdy, it doesn’t feel flimsy, and it’s the most cost-effective option for large quantities.
We recommend 14pt when:
- You hand out a lot of cards — trade shows, door-to-door, events
- Your team needs cards and you’re ordering for several people
- You want a writable card (choose 14pt matte or uncoated)
- Budget matters more than a “wow” moment
14pt comes in gloss, matte, and uncoated. Gloss makes colours pop; matte is softer and easier to read; uncoated has a natural paper feel and takes pen and pencil best.
16pt: the upgrade most people notice
16pt is the sweet spot for a lot of businesses. It costs a little more than 14pt, but it feels clearly more substantial — the kind of card that gets a second look.
We recommend 16pt when:
- You meet clients one-on-one and the card is part of your first impression
- You want a finish like matte laminate or UV high-gloss to feel more premium
- You’re in real estate, professional services, beauty, or anywhere presentation matters
16pt is also the base for many premium finishes, including soft-touch (suede) lamination and raised spot UV. If you want a special finish without going ultra-thick, 16pt is where to start.
32pt: the card people keep
32pt is in a different category. These cards are rigid, heavy, and impossible to mistake for a regular card. They’re often made by bonding layers of stock together, which opens up options like painted or coloured edges — a line of colour around the card’s edge.
We recommend 32pt when:
- The card is the impression — luxury listings, high-end services, founders, creatives
- You hand out fewer cards, so a higher per-card price is fine
- You want painted edges, foil, or letterpress-style looks
Because 32pt is a specialty product, it lives in our premium business cards range rather than standard cards. Expect a few extra days of production compared with 14pt or 16pt.
Thickness is only half the story
Two cards of the same thickness can feel very different depending on the stock and finish:
- Gloss feels smooth and slick, and makes photos and bright colours stand out.
- Matte feels softer and reduces glare — good for text-heavy designs.
- Uncoated feels like natural paper and is the best for writing on.
- Soft-touch feels velvety, almost like suede. It’s one of the most-complimented finishes we source.
- Spot UV adds a raised, glossy layer to parts of the design, like your logo, so they catch the light.
Our advice: pick the feel first, then the thickness. A 16pt soft-touch card can feel more premium than a 32pt card with a cheap finish.
A quick way to decide
If you’re still not sure, here’s the short version we give clients:
| If you… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Hand out hundreds of cards a month | 14pt matte or gloss |
| Want a clear upgrade without a big jump in cost | 16pt matte or 16pt with UV |
| Need cards people can write on | 14pt or 16pt uncoated |
| Want a card people remember | 16pt soft-touch with spot UV or foil |
| Want the most impressive card possible | 32pt with painted edges |
Why the same card costs different amounts at different shops
Here’s something most people don’t realize: the same 16pt matte card can vary a lot in price — and in quality — from one shop to the next. Some shops are set up for long runs of standard stocks; others specialize in thick cards and finishes. Some are trade-only printers that only sell wholesale to the industry.
That’s exactly why we exist. As a print brokerage, we compare options across our network, including trade-only printers you can’t order from directly, and come back with the best mix of price, quality, and turnaround for the card you want.
